Yesudas is one of the few singers who promoted Tamil in South Indian Classical Music. He was the disciple of Chembai Vaidyanadha Bhagavadhar, one of the harbingers of the South Indian Classical Music. I have always found his music to be emotional rather than orthodox or analytical. He always feels bad that he was not brought up on the lap of a great musician father and because of which lack of recognition and promotion.
Those days when he was the disciple stern learning the subtle nuances of classical music from his maestro, he used to stay in a car shed, he recalls. The only drive was to satisfy his emotions and quench his thirst for music. Or what could be the reason for a Christian to learn the difficult and delicate classical music, which is purely a Hindu way.
One way, he made way to reach the rich classical music spread to lot of people which was supposed to be meant for the so-called fans who are rich enough to come in Silk garments and pat the lap sitting in the first row. He was one of the few to sing in good Tamil as the songs in that language was sung only as "Thukkadas" or tailpieces by most of the musicians. He has sung right from Varnams to "Thillanas" in Tamil. When I saw the movie made by director K.Balachander, Sindhu Bairavi, I was thinking if the movie had inspired Yesudoss or the other way.
