February 2008

This time, I visited Tanjore in a journey to see and share the amazing architecture in Indian temples. Tanjore has the beautiful Brahadeeswara, also called, Big Temple. Ironically its a small temple with very few gopuras (towers) and so not sure how it got the name Big Temple.

Tanjore temple is grand for several reasons - for the reason every stone of construction visible is a sculpture - for the reason that the top vimana is made of one single stone - for exemplifying that grandeur is not in big but in details - for the big nandhi and several others.

I took 49 pictures in total on the temple to cover every aspect of the temple and highlight the architecture and turned into several pages full of high-resolution pictures. I have presented these pictures like how they look with the approximate layout of the temple. You could navigate either by clicking the thumbnails from the right layout page or the below links:

This is continuing the exploration of architecture in Indian temples, and an attempt to make the best site for the temple.
